Joan Carpenter was my guest on ART AT SCAT. Carpenter’s exhibit of water color and oil paintings entiteld, ‘Selected Views of Somerville will be on exhibit in the SCAT Gallery for the month of July. I was impressed with her candid discussion regarding ‘being an artist’ and ‘the business of art.’ Joan Carpenter is a passionate artist/entrepreneur.

Joan started drawing and painting as a child growing up on her parents’ small vegetable farm in northeastern Pennsylvania. Daily farm life as well as a vivid imagination inspired her drawings. Carpenter proudly recalled being chosen in elementary school by her teachers to paint holiday scenes for special school events. As a teenager she studied with local artist, Dorothy Barber. In high school, Joan volunteered for all types of art projects, which included creating theater sets.

Carpenter moved to Boston to attend MassArt. Here, she met Tom Prince, the owner a picture frame shop in Boston’s financial district. The painter and the framer eventually married and raised two sons, Val and Carmen. During these early years Carpenter and Prince created a business model that would serve to support their family and their work in the arts. Joan and Tom owned and operated their custom framing business and Joan continued to sell her painting of Boston street scenes. When the family relocated to Maine, Joan gained recognition for her Maine landscape and seascape paintings.

In 2004, Joan and her family returned to Massachusetts and settled in Somerville. Carpenter completed her BA in Fine Arts at Mass Art in Boston, MA in 2007. She now paints at home and also has studio space at the Cambridge Antique Market. Her artwork is on display at the Prince Gallery (Somerville) which is owned and operated by her husband Tom and son, Carmen. One of the painting Joan showed us was an oil painting of the Somerville Library (outside of Davis Square).
